Introduction
Entomology Division was first established as “Entomology
Section” under Ministry of Agriculture/Department
of Agriculture at Putali Bagaincha, Singh Durbar in
1953 with the purpose of providing hands-on plant protection
services to the farmers. In due coarse of time, the
mandate of entomological research was also given to
the section when the National Commodity Development
Programme (NCDPs) established in the country in 1972.
In the same year, a full-fledged Entomology Division
was established at Khumaltar, Lalitpur with its own
office building with laboratory and green house facilities.
Over the time, Nepalese agricultural research systems
took new mode of doing research works and recognized
as National Agricultural Research and Service Center
(NARSC) in 1984s. In the process of structural change,
the NARSC renamed as Nepal Agriculture Research Center
and the Entomology Section as Central Entomology Division
(CED) as one of the central disciplinary division in
1990. In 1991, Nepal Agriculture Research Center received
status of an autonomous organization under Agriculture
Act 2048 B.S as an apex body for agricultural research
of the nation with the name “Nepal Agricultural
Research Council (NARC)”. The CED was again renamed
as Entomology Division.
In the current organizational structure, Entomology
Division is organized under Nepal Agricultural Research
council and Nepal Agriculture Research Institute (NARI).
It acts as a national lead institution that coordinates
with national commodity research programs, regional
and local research stations of NARC for entomological
research works.
Objective
The major objective of the division is to maintain
an inventory of major insect/vertebrate pests of crops
and develop suitable technologies for minimizing the
production losses caused by them. At present division
has focused its effort to develop integrated pest management
technologies.
- Survey, surveillance and taxonomical identification
of major agricultural insect pest and their predators,
parasitoids and parasites in each crop commodity.
- Develop suitable components for IPM technologies
- Develop technologies based on bio-control methods
to manage insect pests and weeds.
- Develop suitable technologies based on botanicals
and organic products to manage insect / non-insect
pests (mite, snail, slug and rodent).
- Develop technologies to minimize hazardous effect
on human health and environment caused due to injudicious
use of synthetic chemical insecticides.
- Develop suitable mass rearing technologies for economically
important insects.
- Develop suitable technologies for rodent management.
- Coordinate, implement and collaborate entomological
research activities with national commodity research
programs and regional/local research stations.
- Provide technical support to the commodity research
programs, regional/local research stations to establish
and improve entomological research laboratory facilities.
- Prioritize, monitor and evaluate entomological
research activities in close collaboration with commodity
research programs, regional/local research stations.
- Support NARC to develop national policy on entomological
research.
- Develop suitable technologies for mass rearing of
predators, parasitoids and parasites by establishing
entomological laboratories facilities.
- Support technical staff giving exposure with advanced
technologies of insect pest management.
- Conduct collaborative projects with national and
international organizations on entomological research
based on NARC priority.
